SCHOLARSHIP and FELLOWSHIP

Quester members are excited and proud to be able to annually fund two scholarships to graduate students earning a Master of Science Degree in Preservation and Restoration, and a three-year fellowship to a graduate student earning a Master of Science Degree in Art Conservation.   Quester Members and their families have donated funds for scholarships for 37 years and have donated funds for our fellowship for 13 years.

SCHOLARSHIP

In 1973, Janet Holley, Quester National President, envisioned preparing scholars for preservation work.  President Holley accepted the challenge of investigating Master Degree Programs in Restoration, Planning, and Historic Preservation, and found such a program at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.   President Holley presented this information to The Questers for their approval and the first Quester Scholarship of $2,500.00 was awarded in 1973.  Annual scholarships continued (with the exception of 1975) until 1983 when it was decided that Questers provide two annual scholarships, one first year scholarship and one second year scholarship to help our students complete their two-year Master of Science Degree.  The Questers increased the amount of the awards over the ensuing years and in 2003 gave our 29th scholarship recipient a second year award of $16,000.00.  Since 2008 we now give each student $17,000.00 each year.  Our recipients are chosen from those students already accepted into the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.  Our recipients are chosen from those students already accepted into the master degree program at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.

FELLOWSHIP

In May 1997, our three-year $21,000.00 Fellowship Program was established at the University of Delaware/Winterthur.  While the Columbia Scholarship Program provides four sectors relating to preservation (design, history, conservation and planning), the Winterthur Art Conservation Program provides an education in archival care and conservation, restoration, and proper storage of art, artifacts, and antiquities. The Questers, in 1997, awarded a fellowship to a young woman, designated "The Questers Fellow", who graduated in 2000 with a Master of Science Degree in Art Conservation.  Currently, our fifth fellowship of $40,000.00 has been awarded to a young woman who will graduate in 2012 from this outstanding program.  She graduated from the University of Delaware in 2004 with an Art Conservation and Art History major and minor in Art.  So she has an honors degree of Bachelor of Arts, Magna Cum Laude.  She has worked at the National Buildings Museum, in DC, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, in VA, Univ. of Delaware Museum Curator Apprenticeship, and McFaddin-Ward House Collections Internship in Beaumont, TX.  Our recipients are chosen from those students already accepted into the master degree University of Delaware/Winterthur Art Conservation Program.

With these two exceptional educational programs which compliment one another, The Questers feel strongly that mankind's historical record will profoundly benefit from the wisdom, care, and tireless efforts of these dedicated preservationists and conservators.  These programs augment our own Quester preservation, restoration, and conservation work accomplished by Quester Members throughout the United States and Canada.
